The Early Memory Procedure (EMP) is a projective test of autobiographical memory developed by
Arnold Bruhn and used frequently in Therapeutic Assessment around the world and in psychotherapy
in the United States and in Europe. In this introductory workshop, Dr. Finn will teach the basic theory
underlying the EMP, describe how to administer and interpret it, review research on the EMP, and
show a video of himself discussing the EMP with an actual client. Then participants will have the
chance to interpret an EMP protocol together and role play discussing it with “a client” with support
from Dr. Finn and the Danish psychologists Mette Kyung Reacroft, and Nina Madsen Sjö, who are
helping facilitate the workshop.
The EMP can be used in psychotherapy by clinicians who otherwise do not do psychological
assessment with their clients. EMP can also be used as part of more comprehensive assessment
batteries and are suitable for children from the age of 4, adolescents, and adults.
